Australia has government, Catholic, and independent school sectors across six states and two territories, each managing its own curriculum within a national Australian Curriculum framework (Foundation to Year 10). Government school teachers start at around A$75,000–A$80,000 depending on the state, rising to A$110,000+ at senior and leadership levels. NSW and Victoria are typically the highest-paying jurisdictions. Independent schools often offer packages above award rates. Annual increments apply, with accelerated progression available for high-performing teachers.

Teaching in Australia requires registration with the relevant state or territory teaching authority (e.g. NESA in NSW, VIT in Victoria). Overseas teachers typically apply for a Skilled Migrant visa (subclass 189 or 190) or a Temporary Skill Shortage visa (482). Teaching is on Australia's Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List, supporting permanent residency pathways.
